Nearly all artists use paper but often do not know much about it, why it works or doesn’t work with different media.

Attendees will learn why quality paper matters, all about sizing, weight, deckles, the features, benefits, and differences between the many types of paper fibers, including sustainable fibers. Attendees will learn about the environmental impact of making paper, how fine art paper is made, and the history of making paper, including a 439-year-old mill.

Joe will have free samples to take home and try!

This is NOT a brand specific workshop. We will cover the pluses and minuses of all popular watercolor paper brands. Videos and images of paper machines in operation. It goes without saying that the products and manufacturing methods have changed since 1584. Only the highest qualities of fibers pass our rigorous testing before use in Hahnemühle papers. The presenter will provide many tactile examples of different felts and paper textures.

Joe started oil painting and drawing in high school and continued his creative endeavors in 1985, at Minneapolis Community College where he earned his associate degree in Commercial Art, Design, and Advertising. 1985 is also the year he started working part-time at a local MN art supply store where his curiosity for product knowledge and techniques leads him into a 37-year long carrier in the art materials industry. He has worked on all sides of the Art Materials Industry, Artist, Store Owner, and Manufacturing. “My goal is to not only sell paper but to follow up with product education”. Joe Domeier grew up in New Ulm, MN, and is very proud of his German roots. “Working for a family-owned German company is the perfect fit”. Joe lives in Burnsville with his wife Carol.
