Find Your Flow Freehand Drawing Part 2: Shading and Shadow taught by Jinjer Markley (Multi-Session)

February 11, 2025 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm

Multi-Session Class

Meets 3 Tuesdays, February 11, 18 +25 from 10am-12pm
$84.00

IN PERSON CLASS

Freehand Drawing means drawing from life without any pencil sketches underneath. Blank pages are scary in a delicious way, watching images appear from nothing is thrilling, and the rhythm of observing and making marks is centering. In this class, you will learn to tap into this meditative experience by learning to look, training your hands and drawing simple objects and figures. This class is just right if you are a beginning drawer, or if you want to loosen up your drawing style.

Part Two: Shading and Shadow

These 3 sessions will focus on adding shading and shadows to freehand drawings. We will quickly review and practice freehand drawing techniques and exercises, and then delve into making sense of shadows. The jumble of tones in an image will resolve into a pattern that makes sense, and you will be able to choose to render shadows in all their complexity, or simplify them in a way that still looks “right.”  We will also learn different methods for creating the various tones of shadows using pen, marker and ink or watercolor.

Week 1: Shadow Basics + classic pen techniques

Week 2: Curved surfaces  + grey markers

Week 3: Transparent and Shiny Objects + ink wash

MATERIALS: for Part 2

  • Multimedia sketchbook that can handle wet media. I like a size that is at least 7” by 9”
  • Insoluble ink pens, such as micron.
  • Soluble ink pens, such as Flair pens or any sumi ink pen. I like Fudenosuke hard tip pens by Tombow.
  • Grey brush markers in at least three tones. I will review options in the class before you need these, so you can wait to purchase them in-store, if you prefer.
  • Waterbrush or paint brush
  • Sumi ink, or black or grey watercolor (Wet Paint classroom has some ink for shared use.)
  • A lamp you can aim, such as a clip-on lamp or a goosejoiujbg98neck lamp if you have one. A flashlight will work in a pinch.  The Wet Paint classroom has a number of clamp lights for shared use.

NEXT CLASS: Want to add some color to your sketchbook drawings from this class? Join Jinjer for Sketchbook Gouache class on Tuesday, March 4th.
