Doodle one-of-a-kind valentines in watercolor’s cheerful hues. This playful introduction to watercolor sketching uses letters, numbers and hearts as free-wheeling starting points to create uniquely patterned artwork–perfect for framing or sending on any heartfelt occasion. This workshop is taught virtually over Zoom with instructor demos, Q&A, independent work time and individualized feedback.

- good quality watercolor paper, 140# cold press. 8×10 sketchbook is versatile size; smaller sizes can be cut from a larger sheet. Strathmore makes convenient watercolor greeting card sizes with envelopes. Instructor demonstrates on 8×10 and 5×7 paper. If you choose loose sheets, have a mounting surface and tape or staples to restrain the paper while you work.
- good quality watercolors, tubes or hard pans, minimum of 6 colors that includes a primary triad, and a palette with good-sized mixing wells or several plastic container lids.
- Aquash waterbrush large round or traditional synthetic watercolor round brush with good point any size #6-10
- rinsing containers
- paper towels or a small clean household sponge
Saint Paul teaching artist, illustrator and author Tara Sweeney has been creating award-winning watercolors for nearly forty years. TPT2’s MN Original showcased her collaborative work https://www.tpt.org/post/artist-tara-sweeney/ on the MN Book Award finalist picture book A to Zåäö, funded by a 2017 MN State Arts Board grant and published by University of MN Press (December 2019). The original illustrations will be on view in conjunction with the exhibit the book inspired–extra/ordinary–at the American Swedish Institute until January 2021. She is professor emeritus with Augsburg University where she taught drawing and painting for 25 years. She earned undergraduate degrees in design and studio art from the University of WI, and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
