Watercolor drawing is a quick way to produce an elegant image that is somewhere between a painting and drawing. Drawing with a brush produces a beautiful variety of lines, and watercolor adds color and the charm of wet and dry watercolor effects. In this course, we will practice techniques and exercises to gain mastery of the brush to achieve neat, bold lines, dry-brushed lines and variegated or ombre lines. Then, we will practice combining washes and watercolor lines, with some tips on how to successfully combine drawing and painting. Finally, we will explore the possibilities of dry brushing and wet-in-wet effects in simple drawings. No drawing experience necessary.
Can be taken separately or as a series to deepen your practice!
Monday 9/21 1:30-3pm CST Class 1: Using a brush to draw: Brush basics $24
We will be learning the basics of how to hold and use a brush for drawing lines, and practice exercises that will help you gain control of the width and texture of those lines. These skills are also useful for drawing in ink.
Monday 10/5 1:30-3pm CST Class 2: Lines and fills: Exploring ways to combine painting and drawing $24
Watercolor is a semi-soluble medium, so drawn lines will bleed and blur unless you take precautions. In this class, we will learn and practice different strategies for combining areas of watercolor fill and areas of watercolor lines.
Monday 10/19 1:30-3pm CST Class 3: Adding wet and dry watercolor techniques to your drawings.$24
In this class, we will explore the many wet and dry techniques available when using watercolor by incorporating a variety of watercolor effects into simple drawings. We’ll play with dry-brushing, blooms, backwashes, salt effects and more!
Materials for each class:
- A pad or block of watercolor paper.
- Waterbrush, small size
- Round watercolor brushes, any size between 2-6
- Watercolors of any kind
- Optional: a blow dryer
