Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs)
Beginning level
Let’s welcome Spring and awaken the senses with color, the smell of beeswax, the light of a lit candle and quiet sounds of a kistka on eggshell. The art of Pysanky, Ukrainian Easter egg decorating, is a centuries old tradition of decorating eggs with a dye and wax resist process. In this 4 hour class (with an hour lunch break in between), we will create one beginning design pysanka in five steps. Justin will guide you through the process while sharing some tricks and techniques along the way. This is great for beginners or the experienced that would like to brush up their skills. After this workshop, you will have a five color Pysanka to proudly display in your home!
Pysanka are created on blown out (emptied) or raw eggs and are for decorative purposes only and are not intended for consumption.
This class is suitable for adults and children (suggested 10 years +) with supervision. This class works with fire from lit candles, fragile eggs dipped into glass jars, and hot beeswax.
Materials needed for this class:
Kistky- fine
Non-Edible Dyes – to mix ahead of time and be at room temperature:
Yellow, Green, Orange, Red, Black
Pure Beeswax
All of these materials are included in the Standard Ukrainian Egg Decorating Kit.
*I like to suggest some additional sizes of Kitsky such as Medium or Heavy that are not included in the kit
Household Items:
1-3 WHITE, unblemished, room temperature eggs.
We will be working on 1 egg design but it’s always a good idea to have spare eggs ready in case of accidents. Farm fresh organic eggs work best at taking the dyes. We will work on either blown out or raw eggs – your preference. Have your eggs clean and dry for the day of class. I’d recommend cleaning your eggs which can be rinsed in a solution of of one quart warm water and one tablespoon white vinegar. This will help remove any debris and will make them more compatible with the dyeing process.
Soft graphite pencil 2B, B, or HB
5 Clean wide mouth jars for dyes
Distilled Water- to mix with the dyes which helps them to last longer
White vinegar
Candle holder with long taper candle ( 5-8 inch is suitable )
Spoons
Roll of Paper Towels
Q-tips or small Paint Brush
White mat board or cardboard to cover your table. Layers of Newspapers work great too.

Justin Terlecki has over 30 years experience creating beautiful Pysanky and first learned while attending Ukrainian grade school in Northeast Ohio. When not creating Pysanky, Justin enjoys his other passions for painting, drawing, and printmaking. His work is inspired by the wonder of the everyday and creates narratives based on his memories and surroundings. Terlecki has exhibited extensively in the Twin Cities and is a past Jerome Fellow recipient for printmaking. His work is represented by Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Justin is also a long time employee of Wet Paint.
