Pocket Watercolor Journal: Reinvent/Invent a Journey with Tara Sweeney

Ever had a really great time traveling but returned home wishing you’d taken the time to sketch and journal along the way? Invent, or reinvent a favorite journey with road-tested materials and a mindset to match. Participants of all levels of ability learn the basics of combining watercolor and ink to mingle art and writing in a portable accordion journal format. You’ll practice keen observation, contour ink drawing, basic watercolor technique, and guided writing prompts to create a postcard-sized keepsake journal. Bring photos, guidebooks, published articles, collected treasures, or anything else that inspires the journal you want to make. You’ll leave with the basics for keeping a watercolor journal on your next adventure.


– watercolor accordion-style, postcard-sized blank journal
– professional quality split primary watercolor palette of at least 6 pigments + paynes gray, white gouache. For example: warm yellow=nickel quinacridone gold; cool yellow=hansa yellow; warm red=naphthol red; cool red=quinacridone rose; warm blue=phthalocyanine blue; cool blue=ultramarine blue
– Medium water brush and any other travel watercolor brushes you have
– Staedtler fine liner permanent black ink pen, 0.3
– 2B drawing pencil
– pencil sharpener
– kneaded eraser
– scissors or xacto knife
– gluestick
– moleskine 3 x 5 unlined journal
– paper towels
– reference material from a favorite trip or materials for planning a dream trip: travel essay/article(s), guidebook(s); photos; souvenirs, memorabilia, collected stuff

Saint Paul teaching artist and writer Tara Sweeney has been creating with watercolor and ink for nearly forty years. “Close to Home: Sketching a Minnesota Year,” is her debut collection of illustrated creative nonfiction featuring her favorite everyday people, places and things. She teaches drawing and painting at Augsburg College.
