IN PERSON CLASS Meets 4 Tuesdays September 13-October 11
We’re happy to bring this popular class back in person at Wet Paint!
Learn the science behind why watercolor behaves the way it does. This informative workshop will be full of sciencey surprises and fun hands-on experiments. Additionally, you will create watercolor reference pages that will help you discover more of your personal watercolor preferences.
Session 1: Meet your watercolors
Watercolor has a life of its own, which can be charming…or frustrating. In this class you will learn the chemistry of why watercolor acts the way it does, and why each tube of paint has its own personality. We will learn the properties of watercolors, and how they can be used to achieve different looks. You will make annotated reference cards to help you remember which colors are suitable for each look. You will also learn to read the manufacturer’s symbols and sample sheets to predict the behavior of each tube before you buy it.
Session 2: Watercolor special effects
In this class, we go deeply to explore different special effects that can be achieved using watercolors, with or without additives such as salt and ox-gall. You will practice the engineering approach necessary to predict and control special effects like bleeding, granulation, blooming, dispersion and lifting. You will make annotated samples to help you remember how to get the effects that you want.
Session 3: Mixing Primaries
Learn the surprising science behind primary colors. You will learn how to read an accurate color wheel and use it to select the correct tubes of paint to get the colors you want. You will also create reference cards to compare the colors you can achieve by mixing different primaries. This class is part one of a deep dive into color theory for watercolorists, although it is useful and informative on its own.
Session 4: Muted colors
Whether you seek sophisticated understatement or light-filled glow, the secret is in muted colors. In this session, you will begin to retrain your brain to see color as it really is, and play with surprising ways to combine colors to get the effects you want. You will make a handy tool to help you mix colors and decide color combinations.
An email with supply list and details will be sent to registrants prior to the class.
