Neocolor II Mastery: Portraits Edition taught by Liz Carlson
January 9, 2025 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Multi-Session Class
Meets via Zoom 3 Thursdays January 9-23 from10:30-12:30 am Central TimeVIRTUAL CLASS
Join Liz in the for the first edition of Neocolor II Mastery Portraits! Together you’ll recreate the following master works and hone your skills in portraiture! Throughout history portraits have been used to record a time and face, and share with viewers the importance, beauty and power of the sitter. This is perhaps why we as social beings are often drawn to portrait art.

Using a favorite medium, Caran d’Ache Neocolor II Water-Soluble Wax Pastels we will explore how these artists represented and rendered their subjects.
Alice Neel, Mother and Child (Nancy and Olivia) 1982, detail
Egon Schiele, Portrait of the Artists Wife (1917), detail
David Hockney, Mum, 1988/89
We will be using these reference images for class. Liz will send transfer line illustrations and reminders for each week’s masterwork to make transferring the images to your paper easier! No drawing necessary.
Supply List:
15 color set of Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels -or the equivalent singles sticks. (Liz calls crayons) An extra white may be helpful. Plus any additional colors you like!
Optional: Caran d’ache Fix crayon holder (optional/ expensive but worth the cost), Caran d’ache plastic palette/or a sanded piece of plastic for a palette.
Papers:
Liz recommends Stonehenge cotton multimedia paper or similar. Use what you have. White Stonehenge is good, unless they want Fawn for the Schiele work. we’ll be working approximately 8.5×11 or 9×12. I’ll include transfer illustrations for every week.
Brushes:
Princeton Snap short handled synthetics or similar.
Rounds 2, 4, 6 or 8
Filbert 8
Extras: Pencil, Kneaded eraser, Painters tape if you’d like an edge around your art. I use the Delicate Surface Tape (light purple) on a variety of papers with no issues.
