VIRTUAL CLASS (February only)

A new Monthly series co-taught by artist Shannon Brunette and yoga and meditation guide Kishori Koch harnesses the power of mindfulness to create artful beauty in the world.

In each workshop we will consider different artful processes alongside mindfulness techniques to create space for creativity–which is where the magic happens. Let your art and mindfulness be an inspired start to your weekend!

What you will need: an open mind, an open heart and a willingness to take a chance. Oh and a few art supplies–which we will share specific to each workshop.

FEBRUARY CLASS: (VIRTUAL)Family friendly (all ages).

Mark making and leaving a trace. Creating beauty with anything, anywhere! In this workshop we will explore non-traditional tools and mark-making to discover an unknown visual story. When we let go of limiting beliefs, we remember that beauty can be found and created anywhere. From the comfort of your cozy home, you will go on a treasure hunt and gather materials and items to transform into an original creations. Dig in your recycling bin, and your junk drawers, your kitchen tools (but maybe not your favorite spatula!) to see what kind of tools and treasures you can find. Bring your painterly expressionist mind to this mindfulness and play experience. We’ll do some drawing and monoprints getting a little messy and moving our bodies.

Supplies: A email will more suggestions/guidance will be sent to registrants. You will need: Acrylic or other water-based paint, brushes (any kind will do)some printing supplies handy (if you have them) and other mark-making tools you love.

Shannon Brunette is the founder of the Office of Cultural Work (OCW). She founded OCW to support cultural workers in navigating oppressive systems and moving their visions into reality. She has had the privilege to work alongside visionary artists for her entire career. She’s held leadership positions at Penumbra Theatre, Walker Art Center, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Lambent Foundation, and Blue Man Group. OCW’s management partnerships include individual local artists such as Seitu Ken Jones and Shana Kaplow as well as organizations such as West Side Community Organization. She is a working art educator partnering with institutions such as Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Wet Paint Art and Grand Marais Art Colony. Shannon holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Chelsea, New York, was a 2017 recipient of the MRAC Next Step Fund award supported by the McKnight Foundation, and was a James P. Shannon Leadership Institute Fellow in 2017. She serves as alumni and inaugural Board Chair of artEquity, an equity and inclusion training organization focusing on the arts and culture field. She was the co-founder of The Drawing Project, a life-long traveler and continues her mixed media art practice inspired by her own life journey and ancestry.

Kishori Koch began her mindfulness journey in 1997, and a passion for holistic wellness permeates all areas of her life, with a focus on yoga, meditation and food as powerful healing tools. Kishori is a yoga and meditation guide, and a seeker of beauty in all of its forms. Her sense of curiosity and desire to help others heal inspires her on her own journey of continuous self-study and transformation. She believes that when we understand our interconnectedness as human beings, we are able to be courageous collaborators, to thrive in our full potential, and to co-create positive change in the world. Kishori has practiced, studied and received certifications in different forms of yoga and meditation, including: Bikram, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Adaptive Yoga. In 2011, Kishori was initiated into the Himalayan tradition of meditation, and in 2016 she received her Master’s degree in Holistic Health. Currently, Kishori is in the final phase of certification as a death doula, the ultimate creative process and journey we all will experience.
