New! Memoir Series

A multi-part series for artists, writers, and anyone who wants to wade into the process of memoir (no writing or drawing experience required). Take a single workshop, or the series, to open a variety of doors into capturing the times of our life.

This class: Images to Words

Vibrant memoir is immersive, like stepping into a snapshot brought to life; trying to get that down in words can cause us to stop before we ever get started.

When we think of the moments that make us who we are – the memories we want to capture are full of images. We can focus on these images and then listen for the words they offer us.

We’ll explore a variety of quick exercises that start with images and lead us to writing.

No drawing or writing experience required. Bring a journal or sketchbook, and a variety of colors in your favorite medium.

This class is being offered using the Zoom online platform. Before registering, make sure your device meets the minimum requirements; view minimum requirements here: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362023-System-Requirements-for-PC-Mac-and-Linux.

Words to Images November 18

Want to capture the stories of your life but not a writer? Or maybe you are a writer, but have wondered if there was a way to add more to the words on your page?

Words evoke images in our minds, and it’s the details of those images that carry the most power – the color of the water on that perfect day, our own reflection in the eyes of an infant, the texture of the upholstery in the old station wagon we drove cross country, the cold shine on the silent hospital floor, the thickness of that slab of birthday cake, a mind map of that events of that one terrible winter, the curve of the face of a beloved in the moonlight.

In a series of exercises based on memories most vivid to us, we’ll focus on capturing the tiny but vibrant details of our unique stories.

No drawing or writing experience required. Bring a journal or sketchbook and a variety of colors in your favorite medium.

Our Big Story –  In The Tiny Details December 2

We all have stories that our ours alone. The tiniest details can hold the most vivid memories. With simple exercises that focus on the small moments of our lives – that loose SweetTart in the back seat of the car, the corner of the protest sign that once stood in our front yard, a hospital bracelet in the back of a nightstand drawer – we’ll use both words and images to find the unique story in the small pieces of our lives all around us. No writing or drawing experience needed. Bring a journal or sketchbook, and a few simple drawing and/or writing tools.

Listen to Your Story December 16

Just as perspective can drastically change a painting, so it can with a story. With simple pen and pencil prompts, we’ll listen for our stories in the voices of others, and capture a different side of the memories we know. Bring a journal or sketchbook, and a few simple drawing and/or writing tools. No writing it drawing experience necessary.
