Getting in Shape: Plein Air Sketching Series -#3 Interpreting On Site taught by Monica Fogg

Jump start your creativity and build confidence toward a regular aesthetic practice.

This series focuses on building skills to establish a rhythmic drawing practice. In athletic training, folks do stretches, curls, sprints. For sketching training, we will stretch and strengthen drawing muscles. Each session includes “calisthenics” such as blind contours (practice seeing), structural drawing (practice with sighting, scale, and perspective. Challenges will be added each session including adding watercolor, building content, composition, going outside, and more..

This series is appropriate for:

  • Those with ALL levels of experience, beginner to advanced.
  • If you’ve taken our Getting Your Feet Wet: Drawing for the Non-Artist Class and want to take the next step.
  • Those who want to join the Plein Air Movement.
  • Those who want encouragement to join the Urban Sketching* Movement.

Final class in the series:

#3 June 12 &19 Interpreting On-Site

Focus will be on considering content and composition and working en plein air. Pencil, pen, water-soluble graphite and watercolor will be used. A challenge given at the end of the first week will be reviewed in the second.

*Urban sketching and plein air drawing are ways to experience the world from a different perspective. It is an opportunity to sit quietly, breathe and see. There are Urban Sketching communities worldwide: local groups, international groups, Facebook groups, etc.

Instructor Bio

Monica Fogg is an artist (watercolor, encaustic, acrylic, woodcut, and lithography) and designer or fabricator (Prince, Lorie Line, Disney, Guthrie Theater, Minnesota History Center and others). She has taught courses in watercolor, drawing, painting, color theory, design, visual studies and art history. She has taught in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota for over 25 years and continues to lead groups abroad for cultural and creative endeavors.

“My personal work is informed and inspired by forms found in nature.I consider and experience the foundations of the earth as symbolic of the ‘grounding’ of spirit. Representation is distilled to form, movement, essence. The process is a dance between concept and emotion.”
