Multi-Session Class

Drawing with ink or watercolor is a quick way to produce an elegant image that is somewhere between a painting and drawing.  In this course, we will learn the similarities and differences of these two media, and practice using at least 2 drawing tools: a brush and a dip pen.  We will explore a variety of techniques you can use to give your drawings character, such as dry brushing and wet-in-wet effects, and strategies for successfully combining the two media. Come prepared with an image or object you’d like to draw, or choose from one of the provided still life objects. No drawing experience necessary.

Class 1: Using a brush to draw: Brush basics

We will be learning the basics of how to hold and use a brush for drawing lines, and practice exercises that will help you gain control of the width and texture of those lines. These skills are applicable whether you are using watercolor or ink. We will explore the many wet and dry techniques available when using watercolor and ink by incorporating a variety of effects into simple drawings. We’ll play with dry-brushing, blooms, backwashes, salt effects and more.

Class 2: Ink vs. Watercolor, Ink AND Watercolor

We will be learning the basics of how to hold and use a dip pen for drawing lines, we’ll cover some common problems you might encounter when working with ink or watercolor, and how to avoid them in the first place, use them for creative effect, or fix them after they happen. We’ll also compare the pros and cons of ink vs. watercolor, so you can choose your medium wisely, and learn to plan a drawing that combines both media successfully.
