Tuesdays: February 28th –March 14th from 5:00-7:30pm
Intro to Italic Calligraphy or equivalent required
Get ready to add some expressive strokes to your lettering/calligraphy repertoire!!!
In the first evening, you will be introduced to the Pentel Color Brush, a wonderfully responsive brush from Japan – a land of brush lettering. You will explore Eastern techniques of brush manipulation and pressure and how they relate to Western lettering. Care and cleaning of your brush (and other brushes) will also be discussed.
Through the following three evenings, several styles of pointed brush lettering will be explored – from more controlled and uniform to loose and wild. You will also try different mediums and be encouraged to try other brushes as well found objects as “brushes.” The goal will be to letter a short quote on the last evening on high-quality hot-press watercolor paper.
You will be excited to transfer this skill to mediums other than paper, too: canvas, wood, metal, walls, etc. Follow your imagination!!!
- Pentel Color Brush – Black or any other dark color for starting out.
- Paper – Borden & Riley Layout paper pad, or Canson Layout, or good quality copy paper. Even yellow lined legal pads will be fine.
- Bring along pointed brushes from home with which you’d like to experiment. (The brushes can be sable, nylon – whatever you have.) The instructor will demonstrate with a variety of brushes to help fuel your creativity.
