December 14, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

A to Zäåö: Playing with History at the American Swedish Institute, published by the University of Minnesota Press.

This fun introduction to the Swedish alphabet, a romp from A to Z (and then Å to Ä to Ö), is also a delightful tour of the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, a cultural center alive with stories past and present. Artifacts from the museum’s collection are charmingly rendered in watercolor by local artist Tara Sweeney (who teaches watercolor at Wet Paint!) and animated by whimsical pen-and-ink characters by her son, illustrator Nate Christopherson.

Join us for a peek into their collaborative process and have your copy signed by the authors. Books will be available for purchase.

This labor of love has been years in the making and Wet Paint is pleased to have played a part in the process from early MN Originals (TPT) videotaping on location at Wet Paint to consulting on materials for their project.

The book is also the inspiration for the upcoming exhibit extra/ordinary, opening at ASI on February 29, 2020.

Nate Christopherson, illustrator, author, and printmaker, works in a variety of media, including wood engraving, crayon, ink, and repurposed vintage books that his grandmother finds at estate sales. He has illustrated Things That Are by Amy Leach; Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer; Henry the Boy by Molly Felder; The Island, an award-winning, limited-edition collaborative artist book; and many letterpress broadsides. Nate earned a BA in studio arts from St. Olaf College and a MA. in special education from Augsburg University. He lives in St. Paul, where he teaches special education. Find him on Instagram @nechristopherson.

Tara Sweeney, artist, illustrator, and author, creates with ink, watercolor, and book forms. She has illustrated Close to Home: A Minnesota Year in Sketches, a personal collection of creative nonfiction; Henry the Boy by Molly Felder; and numerous limited-edition artist’s books and commercial titles. She is professor emeritus with Augsburg University, a signature member of the Minnesota and National Watercolor Societies, and a popular teacher of watercolor workshops. She lives in St. Paul, just down the road from Nate. Find her on Instagram @tarasweeneyart, and online at tarasweeneyart.com
